Pell Grant Special Rule for Children of Fallen Service Members and Public Safety Officers (formerly Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant / Children of Fallen Heroes)
Students whose parent or guardian died in the line of duty in the U.S. armed forces after 9/11, or as a public safety officer, get the maximum Pell Grant regardless of their Student Aid Index. This replaced the separate Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant starting in 2024-25.

Who can apply
- For college students
- Military: deceased
- Circumstance: parent/guardian died in line of duty (armed forces on/after 9/11/2001 or public safety officer)
- Age: under 33 as of Jan 1 before the award year
- Citizenship: U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Homeschool graduates qualify if the homeschool is treated as a home or private school under state law (FSA Handbook). (preferred, not required)
Homeschool students: the sponsor says homeschoolers can apply.
